Hello Parli Community,
The National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence is excited to announce a new structure for the NPTE National Championship Tournament. Below you will find the broad strokes of the proposed changes:
Group Stages: Season-long rankings will be used to place teams into “pods” or “groups” with 1-4 ranked teams being in pod 1, 5-8 in pod 2, and so on. The Group Stages require exactly 24 teams entered into the tournament. If this number is not satisfied the tournament will revert back to the previous tournament model (Swiss).
Pairings (prelims): The tournament will be paired using a patterned round robin. For example: In Round 1, within each Group, position 1 will debate position 6, position 2 will debate position 5, and position 3 will debate position 4. Each round will have two mutually preferred judges.
Advancing: The top 2 teams from each Group will advance to elimination rounds determined by (in order): Total Points (three points for 2-0, one point for 1-1, and zero points for 0-2 result), head-to-head results, and total ballot count. Final tiebreakers are still being discussed and we’re open to feedback.
Pairings (elims): Elimination rounds will be double elimination, except for the semifinals and final rounds. Each elimination round will be judged by a panel of 3 judges. In elimination rounds, the higher seeded team in each pairing will be given the choice of Topic or Side. After each elimination round, teams will be re-seeded. Teams losing in elimination round 4 or later will be eliminated from the tournament, regardless of prior elimination round record. The final round will be judged by a panel of 7 judges.
We of course want to hear from the community, so please use this opportunity to provide feedback to the NPTE Board.
As we continue to build out the structure, our plan is to release more detailed tournament information at the beginning of September. This initial community feedback period will be used to produce the final version of the tournament structure for the 24-25 season.

Each pot has 4 teams who are sorted by rank, 1-4, 5-8, etc. Then they are randomly assigned to a group. That means each group will have one team from each pot, spreading out the seeds among each group with some variance created by the random assignment.
I’d also like to add that we’ve considered a deterministic system that places teams in a “snake” pattern, where 1-4 are placed, then 5-8 in reverse order. That means groups have some pairs of seeds, but it also spreads out the seeds evenly in every group. So, for instance, 1 would be in a group with 1, 8, 9, 16, 17, and 24. 4 is in a group with 4, 5, 12, 13, 20, 21.
I’m curious what the community thinks is a better model. We’re really excited about the chance to use a group stage and we’ve already gotten some excited feedback about it, but we’re still refining, so feel free to make your concerns known.
